Treatment Options for Chronic Pain

  • Prescription Drug Therapy: Stronger medications may be prescriPain Managmentbed when over the counter drugs, such as Acetaminophen and Ibubrofen, do not work. These can include muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs (Valium), anti-depressants and powerful NSAIDs drugs like Celebrex. Additionally, painkillers like Codeine, Percocet etc. may be used. Injectable steroids can also be used where joints are involved. Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) can also be used and involves activating a computerized pump to self-administer medication.
  • Trigger Point Injections: These injections treat knots of muscle that form when the muscles do not relax. It involves injecting an anesthetic with a steroid directly into a trigger point within the muscle. These injections are used to treat pain in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck and can also be used to treat fibromylagia, and tension headaches.
  • Surgical Implants: Surgical implants can be used when drugs and physical therapy do not resolve the pain. Two types of implants may be used.
    • Intrathecal Drug Delivery: These are infusion pumps or spinal drug delivery systems, where a surgeon surgically creates a pocket beneath the skin to accommodate a small pump. The pump uses a catheter to carry the pain medication to areas around the spinal cord called intrathecal spaces. The medication moves to the spinal cord and provides a high degree of relief.
    • Spinal Cord Stimulation Implants: Spinal Cord Stimulation uses electrical signals to stimulate the spinal cord or specific nerves to block pain signals as they travel to the brain. The device that delivers the signals is implanted by a surgeon and is activated remotely by the patient.

Trancutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Therapy (TENS)

Trancutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy (TENS), applies electrical stimulation to reduce pain. Electrodes are positioned near the source of the pain on the skin and transmit signals to the brain to disrupt pain signals. This approach provides short-term pain relief.

Bioelectric Therapy

Bioelectrictherapy is used to temporarily relieve pain by blocking pain signals to the brain. The treatment stimulates the body to produce chemical compounds called endorphins to minimize or eliminate pain sensations. The treatment is used to treat both acute and chronic conditions and can include muscle pain, back pain, headaches and migraines and other disorders.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy relieves pain by improving movement and function caused by injury or disability. A physical therapist often uses physical therapy that includes both stretching and TENS to bring about results.
